    Breaking News

Hatley Road / Taunton Drive / Shales Road junction currently (23/10/07) has 4- / 5-way traffic-lights, and Hatley Road now has speed-humps. (Wynter Road, its default 'bypass' road, is being dug up, presumably to add humps, too).
At peak periods, it may be worth avoiding this route altogether:

From West End Church, take first left, signed "Harefield Shops" into Beauworth Avenue. Trust a local: ignore any street-map you may be following (showing short-cut routes across the estate); due to parked cars, it's quickest to stay on Beauworth until it bears right, becoming Somerset Avenue, with a long green, and a tree-lined stream, to your right. When this scenery stops, you're at the Exford Arms, back on our map. If you're used to using Chalk Hill (uphill) and Wynter Road, we recommend you stay on Church Hill (the main road) and turn right at the top of hill, at West End Church, signed "Bitterne 3/4". Then use above route. If you're used to using Chalk Hill (uphill) and cutting through via Selborne Avenue (despite its blinds and narrows), the latter's relatively unaffected, except by any extra traffic that may be avoiding Hatley / Wynter Roads. If West End Road is very busy, and it's hard to turn right out of Chalk Hill, you can turn left instead, and take the next right. That's Beauworth Avenue, as described above.

From Bitterne, turn right at filter-lights after crossing concrete bridge past Sainsbury's. Stay in left lane as it joins the Bitterne bypass, following Botley / Hedge End signs. Pass a modern church and a library in quick succession. Turn left there, before Payne's funeral directors. After 250 yards, main road goes off at 11 o'clock angle, leaving minor road straight on. Give way to oncoming traffic from 11 o'clock road, but take the minor one (Shales Road). At first 'Give Way' crossroads (currently lights-controlled 23/10/07), turn right into Taunton Drive. Resume previous directions from there (i.e. third on left, the one after pillar-box, etc.)

We don't know how long these restrictions will be in force, nor whether our original directions will still be relevant once the roadworks are completed, so please keep a regular eye on and these pages of the site, if they impact on you. We'll keep you updated as far as we can.
