THIS ROUTE IS VERY EASY TO FIND WITHOUT REFERENCE TO THESE DIRECTIONS: SIMPLY FOLLOW FAREHAM / PORTSMOUTH A27 (not M27) WHENEVER THERE'S A CHOICE. THEN USE OUR MAP (which, by sticking to bigger roads, differs in minor details from the directions below).
Follow your usual route to Mansbridge, across River Itchen
N. B. if you're locating this route on a map, you can only access the Swaythling Arch by turning RIGHT at Stoneham Lane / Bassett Green Road traffic-lights (the first non-pelican set, after Chilworth Roundabout, in case you're unfamiliar with the road-names) then LEFTat the next lights, then RIGHT at the filters. (This zig-zag is fully sign-posted "FAREHAM A27". The map may imply you can go straight on, underneath the railway-line, but it actually involves a 1 1/4-mile detour!!)
Go STRAIGHT OVER next (Chartwell Green) roundabout, past The Master Builder pub on left, as far as the lights by The Lamp & Mantle (once the New Inn)
Turn RIGHT up (steep) Chalk Hill
At T-junction turn RIGHT, then almost immediately LEFT into Selborne Avenue
At next T-junction turn RIGHT
3rd RIGHT after that is Burnham Chase
Approach in right-hand lane
"The First" is at the top of the hill on the left (with holly hedge)
