RICHARD HEAD

Open until 5 July 2005

Special Open Sunday: 5th June 11am - 2pm
when he will be at the Gallery in person

In the 1980s Richard Head approached us with his work, mostly oils, gouaches and drawings of landscapes. Had he not been recommended to us by John Piper and Keith Grant, we might not have recognised their subtlety, since on first impressions they appeared to be conventional. As we discovered, they are distinctively his own interpretations, using sophisticated composition and colour. The drawings, many with bold sepia wash, show emotionally intense line.

His art training culminated in a DipAD course at Bristol Polytechnic (see cat. 7), where he won the David Murray Scholarship from the R.A. Schools (1973) for landscape painting. Prior to this, he did Foundation at West Surrey College of Art, after reading anthropology at Magdalene College, Cambridge. We were aware that he was educated at Eton but, being modest, he did not tell us of the art awards he had won there, including the Harmsworth, the Gunther and the School Drawing (1967) Prizes.

Richard HeadHe has exhibited widely, both solo and mixed, including at Eton, the R.A. Summer Exhibition (1979), the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the New English Art Club, the United Society of Artists and various venues in Surrey, where he lives. He has shown in at least three commercial London dealers. His work is in private hands nationwide, and in two Collections at Eton College, the archives of Bristol Polytechnic, and the University of Victoria, B.C., Canada. When not being an artist, Richard Head is a gardener (see cat. nos. 12, 15, 21, 22, 25 & 31) at RHS Wisley . He was born in 1951.

We have exhibited Richard's work regularly for close on 20 years, including a one-man show in 1995, and are pleased to invite him to launch 'The First' Gallery's new venture on the Web. Once the Gallery exhibition finishes, this site will remain to view afterwards, but only showing those pictures still available for sale.
